High Heart Rates, High Energy

Hey all!

I’m newer to pickleball – I’ve only been playing a month. My resting heart rate is 65-66 (I’m 34, M). When I play doubles, my heart rate is consistently 160-180 for the entire match. Is that normal? Sometimes it doesn’t feel like what I’m doing is intense enough to warrant 160-180 HR lol. Does anyone else get adrenaline spikes when playing? Hopefully this subsides the more I play :/”

Accuracy of Heart Rate Monitors

“I would question the accuracy of your monitor. Try using a chest strap pick up monitor. The wrist ones with the lasers are not nearly as accurate and have significant lag.”

Variations in Heart Rates

“Everyone is different and it doesn’t mean anything is wrong necessarily although checking with your dr is the best idea. Does your HR do the same if you’re jogging? For me I’ve always had a high HR when doing cardio of any kind. My resting is low and my recovery rate is high so it drops right back down when I stop. I will be 50-60 resting and 140-170 while playing. My dr said it’s fine.”

“31m, 190lb, 6’2″ my resting HR is 55-60, and when I play I am between 125-145. 160ish seems really high…”

“I’m 62, resting heart rate of 64 and my heart rate never goes higher than 154 (and I play pretty hard). That does seem high for a fit 34 year old. Are you a bit overweight by chance? Carrying extra weight will definitely make your heart work harder.”

“RHR of mid 50s here. When playing mine doesn’t stay as high as yours the whole time but will have moments of 160-180.”
