Buying On A Budget – G.R.I.P. Golf

Hey everyone and thanks for stopping by. Hope you’re all enjoying the final round of the PGA Championship! Our primary focus here on are the “big guys”… TaylorMade, Nike, Callaway, Cobra, Titleist, Adams, Cleveland, Mizuno… you get the idea. These companies lead the way in innovation and it seems they always provide us something to talk about. SirPutts and I have done the whole golf retail thing long enough to know that not everyone is after the “big guys”. Many golfers either don’t play enough or just don’t have a budget that allows for thousands of dollers in golf equipment. Every now and then we try to provide alternatives for people that are looking for great value. We look for companies that make quality products at good prices… products that will benefit the average golfer but will still leave some money for green fees. Last year we found Innovex Golf and readers of all abilities and tastes have really enjoyed their products. Well… we’ve found another one for you… G.R.I.P. Golf.

G.R.I.P. Golf helps golfers with the “extras”… wedges, putters and hybrids. The company was created to cater to the “forgotten” market… the golfers that wanted decent equipment at a good price. I’ve found that these people will either go with a really cheap knock off or will break the bank and go with something high end. Most of them have enough game to realize that knock offs don’t perform well enough for them. Going high end is a great idea but often times it doesn’t leave them any money to complete their set. I don’t know how many golfers I’ve talked to that go and break the bank on a couple of fairway woods but then can’t afford a few decent wedges. Have a great time flopping your ball over a bunker with your expensive fairway wood!

We had a chance to try a few of G.R.I.P. products and our testers really liked them. The CNC milled wedges feature fairly traditional design. They are offered in three different lofts.. 52, 56 and 60 degrees and all are made from 8620 mild carbon steel. It’s obvious that there was some thought that went into the design of these and it’s not everyday that a lower priced wedge can put some solid bite on a ball. These wedges are a great way for the average golfer to round out their bag without emptying out the wallet… you can get three of them for under $100 USD.

The Hyper Steel hybirds come in four different models… enough lofts that most golfers should be able to find one that works for them. We’ve talked about Hyper Steel in the past but here’s a quick overview. Hyper Steel is cast steel that has been heat treated to increase it’s strength. It’s a material that has been around for a while and many companies have either used it or still use it… Cobra used Hyper Steel a few years back in their fairway woods. The result is a unique sound and a “hot” face. The hybrids also feature movable weights to help control ball flight. All of the hybrids come with a uniflex graphite shaft… an option that will work just fine for the average golfer. Our testers found these easy to hit and very forgiving.

The company also offers an MOI “2-bar” putter and any of their products can be bought individually or in a package. They’ve got lots of great ways for golfers to round out their bags and save some cash at the same time. Swing over to the G.R.I.P. website for more details.

We’ll do some more in depth product reviews of the wedges and hybrids in the coming weeks so stay tuned for that. Thanks to all that have written in asking for more information on companies like G.R.I.P. and Innovex. We’ll continue to look for more companies like these and pass them along as we get them. It’s fun to talk about the latest and greatest from the “big boys” but it’s important to remember that not everyone can justify the expensive prices.

I’m off to watch the end of the golf. Thanks for dropping by and we’ll talk to you tomorrow!
