Wow, another first time winner last weekend at the Byron Nelson Championship. Brett Wetterich used a mixed bag of Titleist and Cleveland clubs including the new 588 DSG wedges en route to his first PGA Tour victory. Trevor Immelman also had another strong showing finishing in second place for the second consecutive week.
The weekend started out very promising. Three of our picks (Els, Van Pelt, and Palmer) were sitting around tenth place after Friday’s round with only Sergio Garcia missing the cut. The weekend wasn’t so kind though. Els was the top finisher with a T13. Bo Van Pelt dropped to T26 and a final round 79 dropped Palmer from 3 under to 6 over and a T73 finish. I feel like I’m close to being on top of my fantasy game but one bad round keeps hurting me.
We are staying in Texas for this week’s Bank of America Colonial. Kenny Perry ran away with this tournament last year but is still on the mend from an early season surgery so we will look else where for our four picks.
Arron Oberholser seems to be getting on another roll and he is my first pick this week. Oberholser has finished T13 and T14 in two of his last three events. He also had a strong T21 showing in this event last year and is looking good for another high finish.
It’s difficult to ignore the season that Lucas Glover is having. In fourteen starts this year he has 10 top 25 finishes and 6 top ten finishes. He is also coming off a T4 and T7 in his last two starts. Glover has no real weaknesses in his game and he knows how to win. The Colonial is as good a place as any for Glover to pick up his second career victory.
Continuing with the trend of solid young players, Vaughn Taylor is pick number three this week. Nothing in Taylor’s game is overwhelming but he does have four top tens on the season and sits 24th in all-around rankings.
And for our final pick this week, how about Steward Cink. Cink has quietly put together a decent start to 2006 and some high finishes would help him earn another spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team this year.
So there we have our picks for the week, talk to you all again next week.
