Now this is a golf tournament worth getting excited for. The unofficial fifth major, The Players Championship at the TPC of Sawgrass. This is one of the all time great golf courses and arguably the strongest field of the season.

Last week is a tournament I think we should ignore all together. We had a T20, T43, T59 and a MC. Thursdays round started out promising for all four picks; Scott, Johnson, Bryant, and Villegas but went south in a hurry. On the bright side, this week can’t get much worse.

This week the guys are at the TPC at Sawgrass, one of the all-time great golf courses. At just over 7000 yards Sawgrass isn’t long but it is a real test. A player is going to have to execute well to win here where as much or more importance is placed on second and third shots than off the tee. And if past history is any indicator we will probably see a new winner in 2006, only four players have ever won this tournament more than once.

Since I’m all about momentum and riding players while they are hot my first pick is Luke Donald. Luke won his last PGA start at the Honda Classic and finished second in this event last year. His great iron play will be key on this golf course.

Not many players have been hotter this year than David Toms. He has one victory and three top five finishes in six starts. If Toms can keep the ball in play off the tee he should do well this week. This seems like the type of course that Toms should do well on.

Fredrik Jacobson is another of the good young talents in the game. His impressive short game and cool demeanor also appear to be a good fit for Sawgrass. This man will win events on the PGA and will win a major someday, it’s just a matter of when.

And how about a pick for the consumate grinder, Scott Verplank. Nothing in Verplanks game will really jump out at you but he is tenacious. He will never give up and never give away a stroke and that will prove to be important here. A second place finish last year doesn’t hurt his chances either.

There you go. Enjoy this week’s big event, I know I will because we have a foot of fresh snow on the ground here!
