Ping Golf has been known for several things since the company started in the mid 1900's. One is always being on the edge of innovation; one is for the outstanding quality of their product; and one is for making great game improvement golf clubs. The newest in the Ping line-up, the G2 iron is no exception.

The G2 iron is cast from 16-4 Stainless Steel. Like all Ping irons it is made with a patented Ping casting technique that makes it very dense yet soft. The heads are oversized with a large, thick sole that accomplishes two things. First, it lowers the centre of gravity of the club to produce a higher ball flight, and second, the wide sole prevents digging of the club into the turf. You will also notice the black piece at the back of the cavity. This piece is used to fine-tune the overall club head weight and to pull the centre of gravity further back from the face.

There are several different versions of the G2 iron available. There is the standard G2, the G2 EZ designed for slower swing speeds, the G2 L for ladies, and the G2 HL which can be used as a hybrid style club in the longer irons. All are based on the same basic design but modified slightly to better fit specific types of player. The shafts that come standard in this club are the CS Lite steel shaft or the TFC 100 graphite shafts. The CS Lite I have found to be an especially popular shaft. It is a lightweight steel shaft that is strong enough to accommodate almost any player. The TFC shaft is better suited to the slower swing speed players.

With all of the new technology available in the G2 iron it is an extremely easy club to hit. It doesn't look great but most clubs in this category don't. As with all things Ping, their customer service and custom fitting is second to none. The only drawback that is noticeable on this iron is the price. It is significantly more expensive than similar competitor's products and for the average player the extra expense might be tough to justify.
