One of the most talked about golf companies as we head into 2006 is Ping. Ping had a bit of an off-year in 2005 in terms of sales but they are back with a completely revamped club lineup for the upcoming season. The i5 irons seem to have the biggest buzz right now and for good reason.

The i5 is the latest generation of the Ping Eye club introduced a long time ago. Over the years Ping has continued to improve this series of clubs and helped to keep it one of the most popular irons in the world. The i5 actually replaces two clubs from the old lineup, the i3+ and the i3+ Blade. The size and shape of the i5 is very similar to the i3+ it is replacing. It is a midsize, cavity back golf club designed for the ultimate combination of forgiveness and playability. The heads are cast stainless steel and the large Custom Tuning Port in the back of the cavity is used to dampen vibrations and improve the feel of the club. The i5 is actually as soft in feel as many forged clubs on the market. You will also notice a notch in the hosel of these clubs which allows Ping to customize these irons to just about any lie angle possible.

The i5 iron is in rare company. It is one of the few golf clubs on the market that specifically targets the mid handicap players. The cavity back heads provide ample forgiveness while the reduced offset allows for control and workability. The CS Lite is the stock shaft offering in this set. It is a good lightweight, steel shaft that works well in this head. One comment I have heard about these clubs is they do produce a high, controlled trajectory. Players could get the ball airborne with very little effort but didn’t have to worry about it ballooning with the shorter irons. As always Ping is one of the leaders in custom fitting golf clubs and their customer service is excellent.
