Next up in our series of backswing elements if one of the most important, and difficult parts to master – the wrist cock. During the initial parts of your backswing, your wrists do basically nothing but hang on for the ride. This part of the swing should only be your one-piece takeaway taking shape and your body laterally moving away from the target.

Your wrist cock only begin once your hands reach your right pocket, or the club is close to parallel to the ground. This happens solely in response to the weight of the club, which increases the further the club is away from your body as you extend your backswing. The cocking occurs in conjunction with your body rotating and your arms listing. The whole process being complete when your arms are parallel to the ground and the club is vertical.

This move is essential to generating power on the downswing as your wrists cock is maintained throughout the rest of the backswing and continuously into the downswing right before your wrists release this pent up energy and the club snaps down into the ball.

Part of the trick to getting a solid wrist cock is a function of a solid grip. A good grip, in the right position will help make this process easier and smoother. Poor grips require modifications and changes in your wrist cock to get the club into the right position, and make returning the club to the ball difficult.
