We’ve been talking about Nike’s square driver for a few months and now everything is becoming a bit more official. We’ll see 2 new Nike Drivers (only one of them will be square) early in 2007.

First the name… Sumo stands for SUper MOment of inertia. The Sumo2 (Sumo Squared… I can’t make the little 2 on here) features one of the highest MOI’s on the market. More MOI means more forgiveness on miss hits. Both clubs will feature a soleplate similar to the that of the current SasQuatch and SasQuatch/Diamana shafts.

The SQ Sumo2 (pictured below) features a beta titanium face, a square titanium body and a composite crown. The composite crown takes weight away from the top of the club so it can be moved elsewhere to increase the MOI. Watch for the Sumo2 in stores starting in February. It will carry a suggested retail price of $479.99 USD and will be available in 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 13 degree lofts.

The SQ Sumo (pictured below) features full titanium construction and is basically a more forgiving version of the current driver. This will appeal to the “anti-square” crowd. The SQ Sumo will also be available in February. It will carry a suggested retail price of $359.99 USD and will be available in 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 13 degree lofts.

2007 promises to be a very exciting year for Nike Golf. The company has really taken the Tour by storm this year and a few good products next year will really carry the momentum forward.
