I have always found that when working on my tempo, hitting my driver was counter-productive. I found it very hard to keep swinging with my usual tempo when I got the big stick in my hands. My swing got quicker and off tempo, in my attempts to crush it. When this happens I always went back to my wedges and play slow simple shots to try and re-gain my tempo.
Problem: The player’s swing lacks tempo, rhythm and timing.
Goal: Learn how to become more coordinated from start-to finish.
Drill: Betty Jamieson was a strong advocate of using this drill to get better tempo. Try hitting lob shots over a tree that’s about ten yards ahead of you. Focus on technique and making a slow controlled swing. You will be amazed at how your face contact improves, not to mention your lobbing skills. Trust me and try it!
